Our celebrant Angus Farquhar invites you to join us for the Spring planting of a Wildflower Memorial at Glasgow’s Necropolis on Saturday, 11th May and/or Sunday, 12th May, at 1pm on each day. This is the next phase of our creative initiative Glasgow Requiem, following the winter planting of 8,000 annual bulbs last December.
The Necropolis, Glasgow’s great silent ‘City of the Dead’ contains over 50,000 burials, and it is well known for the grand memorials to the richer residents of the city, built from 1836 onwards. Less well known is that the cemetery contains 21,000 common or unmarked graves, where people were buried as their families or friends could not afford the price of a headstone or lair.
Angus’s idea is simple; to remember and celebrate the lives of all those who lived, worked, and died in Glasgow, irrespective of wealth or status. The project started in December 2023, when 15,000 spring bulbs were planted by 60 hardy souls. There was a dedication by Celebrate People founders, Gerrie and Susan Douglas-Scott and Karine Polwart composed and sang a beautiful song specially for the occasion.
if you’d like to join us, please come to the Bridge of Sighs, near Glasgow Cathedral, from 12.45pm onwards. Please remember to bring a flask so you have something to drink, a blanket to sit on and dress for the weather!
